Alkyd resin is a kind of oil modified polyester resin, the condensation polymer of polyalcohol, phthalic anhydride, and fatty acid or fatty acid triglyceride.
According to the number and structure of double bond in the fatty acid or oil, alkyd resin fall into drying alkyd resin, semidrying alkyd resin and nondrying alkyd resin.
According to the content of fatty acid or phthalic anhydride, alkyd resin can be divided into short oil alkyd resin, medium oil alkyd resin, long oil alkyd resin, and extra long oil alkyd resin.
The film formed by curing the alkyd resin has high luster and tenacity, strong adhesive power, good wear resistance, strong weather resistance, high insulating property, etc.

Applications of Alkyd Resin
Alkyd resin can be used for coating and paint. It can decorate and protect metal, furniture, vehicles, and buildings, etc.
It can be used as the insulating layer of enamelled wire or made into printing ink for use in printing industry.
Furthermore, alkyd resin can also be used to make moulded plastics.

Storage and Transportation
Alkyd resin is a kind of flammable liquid which will burn when it encounters high temperature, open flame, and oxidant. Its flash point is 23~61℃ and its pyrolysis product is poisonous.
Ⅲ-class packing method should be adopted to pack alkyd resin. The packaged alkyd resin should be stored in an iron drum in a shady and ventilated storeroom.
It should be kept away from heat and fire, and be kept out of the sun.
Do not put it together with oxidant during the transportation.

Attention
Once alkyd resin causes fire, poisoning, and blowout of container, people should take measures promptly. However, people should pay attention to the following items.
1. Firefighters should wear gas mask and fully protective clothing.
2. Fire-extinguishing foam, vaporous water, dry powder, carbon dioxide, 1211 fire-extinguishing agent, and sand can all be applied to put out the fire.
3. The poisoned sufferer should be placed away from the contaminated area or sent to the hospital for treatment.
4. If alkyd resin leaks, people should first cut off all the fire source, and wear gas mask and protective gloves. The leaked alkyd resin can be absorbed by sand, and then buried in an exposed place or burnt in incinerator. The polluted floor should be scraped cleanly with putty knife.
If large area leakage happens, there should be a vaporous water curtain, to suppress explosion.
